17789183_sThe divorce process is filled with important decisions. Many of the decisions you make during your divorce will affect you and your family for years to come. That can be a little daunting. So how do you make good decisions during your divorce? Follow these tips.

-        Get good advice. Don’t decide anything until you talk it over with your lawyer. While you can find some information online and your friends and family can give you their opinions, only your attorney can carefully explain all the nuances of New Jersey law as well as how it will be interpreted in your case with your unique set of circumstances.

-        Don’t act impulsively. There may be moments where you will feel supremely fed up with everything and ready to sign or agree to anything just to get to the end. Don’t. The decisions involved in your divorce involve large amounts of money as well as life-altering things such as custody. These are not decisions that should be made in the heat of anger or frustration. Let yourself cool down and then see if it is still something you want to agree to.

-        Don’t decide things out of spite. While it’s tempting to choose options that you know will really stick it to your ex, in the long run you should be making decisions based on what is best for you and your children, if applicable, not what will annoy your ex the most.

-        Think about things in the long term.  Many of the decisions you are making will affect you and your children for years to come. You need to think about what works for you now, but you also need to consider what your needs will be in the years to come.
